The King is Coming
“Behold, your King is coming! (John 12:12-19)
There are more than one comings of the Lord. He came to Eden to fellowship with the first couple on earth (Gen.2); He came to Abraham to eat with him and discuss the destruction of Sodom (Gen.18:1-8); He came to Moses to call him to deliver Israel from slavery in Egypt (Ex.1-3); He came at various times and places to people in the Old Testament.
I. The King Coming in the Flesh.
A. Something changes when we come to the New Testament. He came in the flesh (Jn.1:14). Christmas changed everything. God became a baby, grew into a man. Why would He do that? To fulfill the purpose of man stated by God at creation. Adam failed, but Jesus did not. He showed us perfectly what God is like (Jn.14:9). He was the express image of the invisible God (Col.1:15). He demonstrated the love of God for sinners by dying on a cross to take the punishment for our wrongs. He then rose from the dead with an immortal human body. He did these things for the rest of mankind to deliver us from our sins, sicknesses, death, and ultimately the grave. He ascended to heaven and poured out the Holy Spirit.
B. One day we will have another one of God’s advents (theological word for coming). Revelation 19:11-16 graphically describes this final coming. It will be awesome and terrifying for those who have not surrendered to His Lordship; but it is wonderful and glorious for those who have, for they will come with Him in their glorified bodies to rule the earth, as finally “the will of God will be done on earth as it is done in heaven.”
C. Between the two advents, the first and final comings of the Lord, is another coming; found in our text, introduced with these words, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Put yourself in this place, this city, Jerusalem, your nation’s capital, the city of the great King. You’re in town to worship and celebrate the annual Passover with perhaps a million other visitors that day. You are unaware that the real Passover Lamb is about to arrive and you are going to see Him. You are about to do what John the Baptist told us to do: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away our sins.”
You’re walking around doing a little shopping and people begin to stir and move toward the road leading into the city, toward the gate. You ask, “What’s going on?” Someone tells you, “Jesus the prophet is coming, the One we think might be our true King and Messiah.” You join the crowded throng, as they move, shoulder to shoulder, toward the entrance to the city. You hear voices lifted up: “The King is Coming! The King is Coming!” You watch as He comes into view, riding like the prophet predicted, on a donkey. People are cutting off palm branches; others are taking their coats off to lay in His path. It’s an ancient “Ticker Tape Parade.” There is celebration, fullness of joy, and shouting. Even His enemies, the Pharisees, are saying, “Look! The world has gone after Him!” What a day! A day you will never forget.
